Salutes The ARts
WQXR STAR (Salutes The ARts) is an initiative to support artists and arts organizations in the greater New York area. At WQXR, we’re committed to making classical music accessible for our devoted audiences, and to welcoming new listeners to its many joys. But as we see it, our work extends beyond on-air programming—as fundamental as that will always be to our mission. As a public radio station, we have both the ability and the mandate to support the deep and dazzling arts ecosystem in our beloved New York and New Jersey area in this moment of crisis. We all know that artists and cultural institutions face enormous operational and financial challenges right now. WQXR is, of course, facing many of the same challenges. But we also have the opportunity to support the classical music community with the resources we do have: our airwaves and you, our audience.

The APL Sessions: Live in the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space
Individual creators and performers have been hit hard by the pandemic shutdown, which has made it especially difficult for them to earn an income. WQXR has been working on ways to help in any way it can, so as part of the STAR initiative, WQXR is pleased to announce the first cohort of its Artist Propulsion Lab (APL). The following six early and mid-career artists, hand-selected by the WQXR team, will receive an honorarium of $15,000, as well as a budget of up to $5,000 to engage collaborators and commission works. They will have the opportunity to take advantage of WQXR’s various outlets to reach audiences, too, via Greene Space performances, on-air curation opportunities, and much more. These inaugural six members of Artist Propulsion Lab are: violist Jordan Bak, mezzo-soprano Kara Dugan, flutist Brandon Patrick George, violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins, The Junction Trio (violinist Stefan Jackiw, cellist Jay Campbell, and pianist Conrad Tao), and pianist Orion Weiss. We welcome these six wonderful artists to the Artist Propulsion Lab, and look forward to enjoying everything they do!
All supporters of this initiative will receive access to the final recording of The APL Sessions compilation film, and advance notice and special benefits for any future STAR events.
Supporters of this initiative who give $5,000 or more are invited to attend one of four intimate recording sessions with an APL artist. See below for performance dates and details.
Space is extremely limited for these behind the scenes recording sessions, with only 30 seats available for each session. Reservations will be confirmed in the order they are received. The APL Sessions will follow all current guidelines as it relates to COVID-19 protocols and safety. We will be in touch closer to each event with details regarding these protocols.
