Monica Melton Joins the WNYC/Gothamist Newsroom as Assistant Day-Of Editor

Read this note from Louis C. Hochman, Day-Of Editor.

I’m excited to announce that Monica Melton is joining the newsroom as our new assistant day-of editor. Monica will be an integral part of the WNYC/Gothamist team that’s at the center of our breaking news operation, and that performs vital editing, coordination and quality control across our subject desks. She’ll oversee one of our newsroom’s most important tasks: taking stock of priorities and opportunities to advance our journalism at the start of each day.

In my first conversation with Monica, we discussed the big-picture and practical parts of this critical role –  and all of her questions were centered around how to best be of service to our audience. She showcases the exact sort of curiosity and commitment to our readers and listeners we strive for in our newsroom.

Monica, originally from Tacoma, Washington, has been a journalist in New York City for more than a decade — a reporter, editor and newsroom leader covering topics from business to technology to entertainment to politics, at publications including The Plug, Politico and Time Out New York. Monica says her most fascinating beat to date has been the intersection of technology, finance, race and entrepreneurship. She is an alumna of CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and the University of Washington, and most recently was the deputy tech editor for Business Insider.

Her first day is July 31.
