On this page you can find information about the fight to secure funding for public media, including relevant legislative updates, key points about New York Public Radio’s crucial role in New York and nationwide, and ways you can help power our mission.
In 2025, Congress voted to eliminate all federal funding for public media, including nearly $3 million in annual support for New York Public Radio. At the beginning of 2026, the private, non-profit Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which was established in 1967 to oversee distribution of federal support for public broadcasting, was dissolved.
The end of CPB funding is a profound loss, but NYPR’s mission remains unchanged. We are here to serve our community, and we know that our greatest strength has always been you: our listeners and supporters. Because of you, New York Public Radio continues to deliver powerful storytelling, fact-based journalism, and cultural programming that informs, inspires, and connects audiences. As the media landscape shifts, here’s what you need to know and how you can stand with us.
How can I support NYPR?
Learn more about how you can power our mission in this new reality without federal funding.
- Support the Station-to-Station Programming Project
- After federal funding was clawed back, New York Public Radio launched the Station-to-Station Programming Project to help at-risk public radio stations nationwide. By making a bundle of our national programs available free of charge, we’re helping stations redirect limited resources to the local reporting only they can deliver.
- As of spring 2026, 220 stations in 32 states across the system are receiving relief through the Station-to-Station Programming Project, representing 38% of the stations in WNYC’s distribution network and approximately 30% of news and talk stations in the NPR system. Based on the current landscape of public media funding, and the feedback we’ve received about this project from participating stations, we expect that the need for this program will continue and increase.

How did NYPR lose funding?
On July 18, 2025, after multiple votes in both the House and the Senate, Congress approved the White House’s proposal to rescind two years of already-approved federal funding from NPR, PBS, and all member stations nationwide.
The White House signed the package into law on July 24, 2025, clawing back already approved funding for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. At the beginning of 2026, the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting voted to end its operations. Patricia Harrison, president and CEO at the time, said in a statement that “the CPB’s final act would be to protect the integrity of the public media system and the democratic values by dissolving rather than allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks.”
For New York Public Radio, this means an ongoing funding gap of $3 million per year—money we have historically relied upon to help us deliver trusted journalism and cultural programming.
What is the latest in the fight for federal public media funding?
See select relevant legislative updates.
- April 2026 update
In March of 2026, a federal judge ruled that the 2025 executive order defunding public media violated the First Amendment. While this ruling represented a positive development for free speech rights, it does not restore our funding now or in the foreseeable future.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting remains shuttered, and our station and other public media outlets across the country must continue to operate without the $1.1 billion of federal funding, including nearly $3 million for New York Public Radio, that was clawed back by Congress.
That means your generosity remains crucial to helping NYPR serve as a vital civic and cultural resource for New York City and beyond. - January 2026 update
On January 5, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a fiscal year 2026 funding package that included targeted support for two specific public media-related programs, but did not restore broader funding for local stations. The package provided $31 million for the Ready To Learn education program and $48 million for the Next Generation Warning System, which helps public media outlets provide important public safety and education services in communities throughout the country.
Why is New York Public Radio so essential?Public media plays an indispensable role to provide rigorous journalism, civil conversation, and cultural programming that reflect and connect our diverse communities.
New York Public Radio is home to the largest public radio station group in the country (WNYC, WQXR, and New Jersey Public Radio), as well as local NYC news site Gothamist, pioneering podcast producer WNYC Studios, and event venue The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space. Together, these mission-driven entities form an essential community asset that provides incomparable service in New York and New Jersey, and nationwide:
- New York Public Radio’s broadcast signals reach the five boroughs of New York City, the surrounding New York suburbs, and approximately 75% of the New Jersey population. Our content is also available online to those across the country.

- On-air for almost 90 years, WQXR is the city’s only all-classical radio station, and the most accessible platform for audiences to experience the joy of classical music.
- WQXR broadcasts live concerts from Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and other iconic music and cultural institutions, vastly expanding their reach and opening their doors to those for whom a concert ticket may be out of reach.
- WNYC Studios is home to beloved industry-leading podcasts and national radio shows, including Radiolab, The New Yorker Radio Hour, On The Media, and more. Our shows are standard-bearers for audio journalism and storytelling, from the in-depth investigations, to the engaging cultural programming, to the free online learning materials produced alongside kids’ science show Terrestrials and used by educators nationwide.
